Based on reports from landowners and state employees, the coyote (Canis latrans) appears to be increasing in Florida. Coyotes are known to be responsible for millions of dollars of damage to livestock and produce in other parts of the country. Future effects of coyotes on cattle ranching in Florida will depend on the ability of coyotes to adapt to Florida and the importance of calf predation in coyote diets. Information on habitat preferences, diets, reproductive biology, and offspring survival will enable us to predict whether coyotes are likely to increase or remain at low numbers in the near future. Information on calf loss and the influence that calving has on home range and movement patterns will provide information on the extent to which control programs
might be needed and will enable us to chart a strategy for the future.
