Current Detections
Late blight continues to be detected on tomatoes in new locations and persist in previously infected fields. Unfortunately, the weather conditions of cool night and moderate day temperatures and heavy morning dews are ideal. Initial lab characterization of the late blight pathogens shows that it is the same as the type which occurred in spring 2006 and not the highly aggressive type which occurred in 2005. Preliminary lab screening of some isolates shows that there is sensitivity to mefenoxam (Ridomil). This was also true for the spring 2006 isolates which were mefenoxam sensitive (35%), intermediately sensitive (55%) and insensitive (10%). In 2006, late blight persisted in the field through May. Depending upon weather conditions, we may be faced with constant pressure this growing season also. Preventative spray programs following fungicide resistance management guidelines are recommended.
